I’ve been laboring over and cooking up a new idea over at a new site, Tiny Run.
It’s actually a hearty blend of a few of my own ideas and inspiration from others. It has been simmering for a while, so the flavor should be excellent.
Please go and take a look around, participate in purchases or the animated gif contest, and let me know what you think.
I attended the annual Mookiejam benefit event last night, and wow. My face hurt from all the smiling. It was such a high level of feel-goodery that one would think that nothing might stop the wave pouring over everyone.
I was saddened to see my shirt that was part of the silent auction not really holding anyone’s attention, nor garnering any bids. And I was up until that point very pleased with it. Then I realized something about the medium. It’s a shirt. It’s on a hanger. To some of the less discerning eye, might it just be only so much laundry? This is a little disappointing, but gives me more impetus to try to improve display, whether it be in the studio, or out at events. Also, to remember if the shirt is by itself, and not part of a larger show of my work, that it needs to range in the ‘less subtle’ variety. Chalk it up to learning. Hopefully by the end of the evening the bids went in and up, for the cause more than for my ego.
And when the MC of the evening said something about the next performer doing beat box…I said, “really?” and was honestly only token apprehensive, but mostly interested and confident, as everyone there was a talent goldmine. And then Yuri brought it.
I can only recommend seeing this guy live. Holy holy. Just amazing. In a long free form segment he beat box from Sant’N'Peppa to Soft Cell to Iron Butterfly. Now that’s a medley. Hot damn.
I snagged, in the heat of an idea, an Underwood typewriter from craigslist. The old gent who answered the door offered to get me a piece of paper to try it out and make sure it works. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I intended to scrap it and use only the hammers for a particular project.
Now that the archaic thing is sitting in my home, I’ve come to appreciate, if not wholly understand, all its levers and knobs, little bits, and general solidness. I’m wavering…
Another broken electric typewriter is set to arrive at my door soon, via a friend’s freecycle efforts, and I’m thinking that I’m going to wait and scrap that one first. This would leave me with the Underwood intact: a very old, pretty, and heavy, paperweight.
I’ve loved Hugh for a while now. Since I read his ‘how to be creative‘ years ago I’ve gone back to it, and been refueled to the same level every time. My own personal grail giving me eternal motivation with every sip.
Now he posts a great list of thoughts about cartooning, or drawing cartoons on business cards.
Number 23 got me good.
23. I want to draw cartoons that rip the face off the reader. But in a good way.
I can just so easily replace ‘cartoons’ with ’shirts’…
Found this batik artist with some serious chops. I love it when I find someone who makes me think I have far to go before I hit what I really want.
Too bad their site is utter horror, as P. Alexandria’s batik is pretty interesting. Wish it listed exactly how large the work is as well.
Their work made me think more about a classic art education approach to images in batik. Some of their work makes me imagine them as an art student, taking drawing classes, etc., but instead of drawing or whatnot, they work in wax.
